Course Description
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program originated to help students achieve proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It focuses on enabling students to learn in other content areas besides functioning effectively in social and academic contexts. At Middlesex County Magnet Schools, the non-English or limited-English speaking students originate from many countries representing diverse languages and cultures. Students are tested on their English language proficiency levels upon entering the district and annually in the spring (with the ACCESS test) as required by the Department of Education. Multiple criteria are looked at to determine when students are ready to exit the ESL program.
