Course Description

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program originated to help students achieve proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It focuses on enabling students to learn in other content areas besides functioning effectively in social and academic contexts. At Piscataway Vo-Tech, the non-English or limited-English speaking students originate from many countries representing diverse languages and cultures. Students are tested on their English language proficiency levels upon entering the school and annually at the end of the year (with the ACCESS test) as required by the Department of Education. Multiple criteria are looked at to determine when students are ready to exit the ESL program.
